Founded
in 1994, Centro Nueva Creacion is dedicated to
building
hope in the Fairhill and West Kensington
neighborhoods
of North Philadelphia
by
providing opportunities for children and families to transform
their community. This mission is realized through child-centric
after-school and summer programs based in literacy, advocacy,
art and technology. Utilizing an asset-based approach
that demands the development of local leadership and celebration
of the community's rich Latino culture, Centro Nueva Creacion
strives to complement, fill in the gaps, and maximize the
education and opportunities available to young people.
The
Goodlands® is a community-based arts program created in
the summer of 2000 as a program of Centro Nueva Creacion.
The Goodlands® provides opportunities for young people
ages 5-13 years to transform the image of their neighborhood
through photography. Since its inception, The Goodlands
has trained over 800 children in photography and mural painting.
Even
though some residents of Philadelphia still choose to stay
away from what they have long perceived as "The Badlands",
through the work of these aspiring photographers the boundaries
of fear and ignorance are slowly being eroded. Countless
exhibit attendees have been able to connect with the neighborhood
through children's photography. Young people have the
opportunity to make these powerful images of The Goodlands®
community become their future. |
