FREE ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE COURSES FOR ADULTS

In an effort to serve more residents, Centro Nueva Creacion has partnered with the Lutheran Settlement House (LSH), a North Philadelphia-based non profit organization, to offer residents English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. LSH has a 105 year history of providing supportive services to vulnerable families, including services to the homeless, adult literacy, and employment training.

During the school year classes took place in our building at 185 W Tioga Street, which is equipped for classroom learning and is unoccupied by children Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm. ESL classes took place Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30-2:30. Eight adult students enrolled in ESL, most of who were family members of students who attended the Centro After School program. We plan on teaming up with LSH again in the fall to continue to offer free ESL classes to community members. We hope that this will be one of many joint ventures between Centro and LSH.

MAYOR'S PHILLY SPRING CLEAN UP

On April 5th, 2008 Centro Nueva Creacion participated in Mayor Nutter’s citywide clean-up event, Philly Spring Cleanup. The cleanup was a huge success for the city of Philadelphia: over 200 community organizations and over 3600 volunteers participated in the event, resulting in 2.56 million pounds of trash being collected at 71 commercial corridors, 28 recreation centers, and 27 Fairmont Park sites.

Centro staff helped to get the word out in the Fairhill and West Kensington community by creating and distributing flyers and encouraging our students and their families to participate. Centro focused on cleaning a playground a block from our facilities on Phillip St. between 2nd and Ontario. The playground is typically littered with trash and broken glass and is often a place where drug transactions occur. In order to transform the playground into a clean and safe space community involvement and enthusiasm are essential. In addition to the support of North Philadelphia Weed and Seed Project, over 40 community members participated in the April 5th cleanup.

Regular cleanups are needed in order to reclaim this space for the community. The level of participation witnessed on April 5th has inspired Centro to continue working with the community to keep the playground clean and safe. Centro has plans to clean the playground again in the future and paint over graffiti and dilapidated play equipment. It is our hope that the cleanup efforts of community members with the support of Centro and other community partners will help make a lasting and positive impact on this playground.

MLK BENEFIT PHOTOGRAPHY RECEPTION AT GEECHEE GIRL RICE CAFE

On Martin Luther King Day, Centro partnered with the Geechee Girl Rice Café in Mt. Airy to host a Benefit Photography Reception. The event included all new photographs from our students, beverages donated by Shade Mountain Winery and Victory Brewing Company, and delicious appetizers prepared by Geechee Girl Rice Café. The benefit generated over $900 from the sale of tickets, donations, and photographs. All the proceeds benefit The Goodlands Photography program. Centro would like to thank everyone who supported the event.

ROLL OVER AND READ

This school year, in our continued effort to increase literacy skills, Centro Nueva has partnered with Roll Over and Read, a Norristown-based program that pairs kids with therapy dogs to help them become more confident readers.  Once a month 5-7 dogs come to the center and each student is allotted 15-20 minutes to read one-on-one with the dog.  The kids enjoy spending time with the dogs without the pressure of reading aloud to a group of their peers; it’s just them, the dog, and their favorite book!
