PHOTOGRAPHY CLASSES
Centro
Nueva Creacion strives to offer specialty classes to students
that would not normally be available in the public school
curriculum. These classes are a part of a wellness curriculum
that provides holistic programming to meet the academic, social,
and artistic needs of every child.
For
photography class students are broken into age appropriate
groups. The youngest groups includes 5-7year olds, the
middle group includes 8-10 year olds, and the oldest group
of students is comprised of 10-13 year olds.
DISUSSION
AND PRACTICE
Photography
class is broken into two parts: discussion and practice. The
first portion of class is spent discussing a basic
photographic principal. Examples of topics covered in class
include composition, the rule of thirds, and perspective.
Students exchange ideas and share examples about the topic
before being assigned a theme. The assigned
theme guides students as they photograph their neighborhood.
Examples of themes include, peace, community, and family.
After
discussion, students are each given a camera and go into their
neighborhood with their instructor to practice the
photographic principals and themes discussed. Children
are encouraged to freely interpret the given theme and to
explore their ideas photographically. The students are continuously
reminded that there is no wrong interpretation.
At
the end of the practice portion of class students pick out
their favorite image among the photos they have taken and
are asked to explain for the group why it is their favorite
and what makes it a good photograph.
In
addition to creating thoughtful and impressive photographs,
the children learn personal and professional skills.
Students learn to communicate ideas visually as well as verbally
and how to document their neighborhood. In addition,
photography classes challenge children to think creatively
and critically, to follow and interpret instructions, and
builds self-esteem and problem-solving skills.
